What We've Been Up To...& Late Breaking News!
Contrary to "urban lergend," the HHC is alive and well! Admittedly, we have and continue to undergo some changes, have continued to be active in pursuing our mission and vision.

Summer & Fall, 2004

  • Advocacy and Activism- ATTEND a Groundbreaking Symposia in July in Santa Fe
During the past year, Don Shapiro of the HHC, and Dr. Ann McCampbell activist and head of the New Mexico MCS Task Force have been involved in a new consortium known as the New Mexico Environment and Health Coalition. As a result of their efforts, the Coalition is engaged in a major initiative " Implementing the Precautionary Principle in New Mexico." In addition to proposing a New Memorial, The PP will bring together New Mexicans who are passionate about creating and promoting a health environment at the Symposia in Sanmta Fe. Beginning Saturday, July 24 & Sunday, July 24, followed by two subsequent Saturdays we hope learn together and buildcommunity support for this movement in New Mexico. For those familiar or unfamiliar with the Principle, suffice to say that the potential of the Precautionary Principle (PP) to positively transform the lives of people with MCS, and every other human and living creature on the Earth is significant. Other Conferences and Educational Activities

We are pleased to announce that Don Shapiro will be presenting a workshop at the 2004 Annual Southwest Conference on Disability. The Conference will take place September 29-October 1, at the Albuquerque Wyndham Sunport Hotel and has been advertised as a "Fragrance Free event.

Don's workshop, "In Consideration of People with Environmental Illnesses," is scheduled for Wednesday, September 29 from 12:45-2:00 PM.

Here's the workshop description:
"
Curious about the statement saying that this 2004 Disability Conference will be a "fragrance-free event in consideration of those with environmental and chemical sensitivities?" If so, this workshop will provide you with new, de-mystified awareness of this often misunderstood disability and what we can do to promote the health, well-being and potential recovery of those afflicted. Through presentation, story-telling, dialogue and video documentary, you'll learn how to conduct a preventative environmental assessment, how to provide reasonable accommodation at home, at work and in the community, and learn about new health promoting, advocacy and policymaking initiatives - such as the Precautionary Principle - that can positively impact people with disabilities, their families and caregivers in New Mexico. "

Some scholarships are available for people with disabilities. For more information about the conference call Barbara Hussey at 272-6247 or go totheir website:

Housing Assistance and Referrals
This year, the HHC provided assistance to over 100 individuals and families in finding safe housing, examining potential homes, linking prople with realtors, contractors & architects, and helping folks find relocate to New Mexico. Members of the HHC also provided hands-on help to people with MCS who are building safe habitats.

The Oasis Project... moving toward the light at the end of the tunnel ...
The HHC is actively exploring several exciting possibilities for making the Oasis Project a reality! Included is a possible collaboration with two ecology-oriented organizations in New Mexico for experimental development of healthy homes on their properties.

In addition, the HHC is looking at the possibility of acquiring land which could be converted to use as a transitional residence exclusively for the chemically injured. Such a facility center would provide affordable, safe, short-term housing for people searching for permanent housing in New Mexico, as well as those who are temporarily homeless as a result of toxicity in their homes or neighborhoods. It might also include safe camping sites. Of course, such a venture will require heavy-duty funding.
